[6 - 6] kitchen shears are an essential part of
[6 - 8] any cook's knife kit we use them for a
[8 - 11] wide range of tasks like cutting twine
[11 - 13] snipping herbs and butterflying chicken
[13 - 16] just to name a few we tested six pairs
[16 - 17] of kitchen shears and we rated them in
[17 - 19] two categories performance and ease of
[19 - 26] use here are the highlights
[28 - 28] all right so we've got our twine here
[28 - 31] and we are going to snip through them oh
[31 - 32] pretty well yeah
[32 - 34] this is good
[34 - 36] nice and sharp that seems like i have
[36 - 39] lots of thoughts on these that aren't
[39 - 41] they cut the twine fine yeah i'll leave
[41 - 42] it at that for now all right so all of
[42 - 44] these were able to snip twine this is
[44 - 46] admittedly a very easy test there are
[46 - 48] some shears out there that can't do it
[48 - 49] though you might have one in your
[49 - 51] kitchen drawers right now um but all
[52 - 53] these six they were fine at twine so
[53 - 55] let's move on
[55 - 57] so i'm just cutting off the the ends
[57 - 59] that don't look so great these are doing
[59 - 62] pretty well i think there's really only
[62 - 64] a very short area of these blades that
[64 - 66] is the business end right here so i'm
[66 - 68] kind of lining them up that's sort of
[68 - 70] okay because it's precise but if i was
[70 - 72] trying to cut bigger amounts of things
[72 - 74] it's hard to open your hands up wide
[74 - 77] enough to use the full extent of these
[77 - 79] blades which is a bit stumpy it's about
[79 - 81] two inches these are the shunned
[81 - 83] multi-purpose shears and they are
[83 - 85] opening a lot wider and there's more
[85 - 87] blade length here
[87 - 88] so it's easier to
[88 - 90] not have to be working just at the very
[90 - 92] tip here
[92 - 95] longer blades longer blades and a little
[95 - 96] bit of
[96 - 97] serration here
[98 - 101] cool oh kind of like slipped do you like that
[101 - 103] oh kind of like slipped do you like that kind of like do a little thing where it
[103 - 105] turned on the stem okay so these are the
[105 - 107] all clad shears um i'm gonna cut some
[107 - 109] rosemary i'm gonna cut it right down by
[109 - 111] the woody part of the stem and see how
[111 - 112] that does
[112 - 115] yeah kind of bends and then yeah yeah
[115 - 117] it's not it's not effortless which is
[117 - 119] what you really want all right so this
[119 - 120] is one of our favorite uses of kitchen
[120 - 121] shears because they provide some really
[122 - 124] nice muscle to cut through chicken bones
[124 - 126] would you like to do the honors yes i
[126 - 129] have the shun all-purpose shears
[130 - 132] wow i feel like i'm cutting through paper
[132 - 134] i feel like i'm cutting through paper that was awesome that was so easy with a
[134 - 135] knife you know you really have to like
[135 - 137] crunch through and you're not cutting
[137 - 139] from both sides they're a little bit fat
[139 - 141] these blades and so when you're making
[141 - 143] the cuts you really have to pull them
[143 - 145] apart it didn't seem to get as
[145 - 147] wide yeah it has these little micro
[147 - 149] serrations on the blade and i think it
[149 - 151] grabbed the chicken pretty well
[151 - 154] but it didn't feel quite as comfortable
[154 - 156] it kind of slipped off there did you see
[156 - 157] that yeah
[157 - 159] oh my goodness
[159 - 160] like i'm trying to cut in and it's
[160 - 162] coming back at me all of the shears
[162 - 164] sailed through the easier tasks but when
[164 - 166] we challenged them to cut tougher denser
[166 - 169] more slippery foods some of these shears
[169 - 171] just didn't cut it
[172 - 174] hilarious lisa all right let's go on to
[174 - 181] our final round ease of use
[183 - 183] we have a beautiful pie dough rolled out
[183 - 184] but as you can see
[184 - 186] there's some overhang here and we need
[186 - 188] to trim this up this is a really cool
[188 - 189] test because you want scissors that feel
[189 - 191] really dexterous because you're cutting
[191 - 193] moving going around a round surface so i
[194 - 197] have the j.a henkels here okay let's see
[197 - 198] how this feels
[198 - 200] how's that feel alright it feels really
[200 - 202] good actually it's really cutting neatly
[202 - 203] it doesn't feel like you're able to do
[204 - 205] little tiny pieces and bigger pieces and
[205 - 207] it's not stretching or distending the
[207 - 210] dough in any way so hannah these are the
[210 - 213] oxo shears and we've traced the bottom
[213 - 216] of the cake pan a circle there in our
[217 - 218] parchment and we're going to see how well they
[218 - 220] and we're going to see how well they work and how they feel
[220 - 222] how are the blades
[223 - 224] good nice and sharp
[224 - 227] nice and sharp tension feels right
[227 - 229] yeah we found some of these where you're
[229 - 232] opening and closing and they're very
[232 - 235] difficult or on the flip side way too
[235 - 236] loose and they don't have any they don't
[236 - 238] help you at all
[238 - 239] how's that
[239 - 241] nice it dropped right in looks beautiful
[241 - 244] the tension's a little tight in these
[244 - 246] they just feel a little stiff still
[246 - 249] cutting here for the rest of my life
[249 - 251] all right here we are with another test
[251 - 252] a cauliflower which may seem like a
[252 - 255] bizarre usage for kitchen shears but
[255 - 257] actually this really gets at the agility
[257 - 258] again and have you ever cut up a
[258 - 260] cauliflower and the little teeny little
[260 - 262] white bits get everywhere this will make
[262 - 267] it much tighter so i have a shun here
[267 - 268] let's see i'm not going to use a knife
[268 - 271] at all i'm just going to go right at it
[271 - 273] these are nice and long these such long
[273 - 275] blades that i could really like get into
[275 - 278] all these weird spaces and trim this
[278 - 280] flat the real test i don't know if it's
[280 - 282] going to be able to do this can i hack
[282 - 284] off the entire
[284 - 287] stem
[288 - 288] that was so easy
[289 - 291] wow so how do those feel for just general
[292 - 294] so how do those feel for just general ease of use these are great the tension
[294 - 296] is perfect it's even the whole time you
[296 - 298] know it's nice and even not too loose
[298 - 301] not too tight and big finger bows i got
[301 - 303] plenty of room to grip in there
[303 - 305] slightly you know some sort of plasticky
[305 - 307] coating on here so it's not that hard
[307 - 309] steel so i'm a little protected
[309 - 311] this did really well that's great well
[311 - 313] done sean it's ow
[313 - 314] it hurts right here it's getting out
[314 - 316] already right now oh my gosh it's
[316 - 318] because you really
[318 - 320] you need to brace yourself against there
[320 - 321] to use the scissors and it's just it's
[321 - 323] just a hard
[323 - 324] metal edge
[324 - 326] this is super easy
[326 - 328] they're pretty comfortable
[328 - 330] how do the bows feel
[330 - 333] the bows are a little bit hard a little
[333 - 335] but not bad pretty good generally we
[335 - 338] like sheers with roomy finger bows and
[338 - 339] medium weight shears of about four to
[339 - 342] five ounces of the six we tested one
[342 - 346] pair stood a cut above the rest lisa
[346 - 348] the shunned multi-purpose shears they
[348 - 350] were our favorite they could handle
[350 - 351] anything we threw at them they were
[351 - 353] comfortable to use and really made every
[353 - 356] job a lot easier we also had a best buy
[356 - 358] the j.a henkel's international take
[358 - 360] apart kitchen shears they performed
[360 - 361] really well too they just weren't quite
[361 - 363] as powerful as our winner for more
