[3 - 3] hi i'm lisa mcmanus from america's test
[3 - 4] kitchen gear heads and i'm here to
[4 - 6] answer some questions about smart
[8 - 9] displays um
[9 - 11] um the first question can i remove the
[11 - 14] phrase hey google or alexa
[14 - 16] yes you can go into the settings and you
[16 - 17] can change the wake words to whatever
[18 - 19] you want which is especially helpful if
[19 - 21] you live with someone named alexa or
[21 - 24] anything similar that might trigger the
[26 - 28] device how do i know if my smart home device
[28 - 30] how do i know if my smart home device isn't wiretapping
[30 - 32] my conversations
[32 - 34] actually to some extent they do because
[34 - 35] they're always listening for their wake
[35 - 37] word you know they're instantly sending
[37 - 39] what they hear to their server to
[39 - 41] determine if you've said their name and
[41 - 43] if they need to respond
[43 - 45] you can go into device settings and do a
[45 - 48] clear history and you can kind of hobble
[48 - 49] them in a few other ways like turning
[49 - 51] off the microphone and the camera not
[51 - 53] teaching them your face or your voice
[53 - 55] but then it does limit what they can do
[55 - 57] for you and how much you can customize
[57 - 59] them it's a trade-off to learn more
[59 - 60] about how they could potentially
[60 - 63] endanger your privacy i consulted with
[63 - 65] an expert professor david chofnis at
[65 - 68] northeastern university in boston and he
[68 - 70] studied cyber security with a special
[70 - 72] interest in consumer devices and what
[72 - 74] information they collect on their users
[74 - 76] we've been figuring out how to work
[76 - 77] together as we test these types of
[80 - 82] devices is there a review on those griddles or
[82 - 84] is there a review on those griddles or induction burners that we were cooking
[84 - 85] the salmon on
[85 - 87] yes we do have reviews of both that
[87 - 89] portable induction burner and also the
[90 - 92] non-stick skillet that we were using you
[92 - 93] can find them on our website
[96 - 98] americastestkitchen.com um here's a question why not just a
[98 - 100] um here's a question why not just a smart speaker
[100 - 102] you didn't need the screen except for
[102 - 103] the timer which frankly your phone can
[103 - 105] do
[105 - 107] why the extra expense of a smart display
[107 - 109] when a forty dollar smart speaker from
[109 - 112] google or amazon will do okay well
[112 - 113] you know these are the most advanced
[113 - 116] devices that those companies make and we
[116 - 117] wanted to see what their possibilities
[118 - 120] were those screens are really useful for
[120 - 121] those screens are really useful for doing a lot of different things like
[121 - 124] watching videos news entertainment
[124 - 127] how-to's you can display photos you can
[127 - 129] you know do video calls on them you can
[130 - 131] hook up to smart doorbells you can see
[132 - 134] who's at the front door lots of other
[134 - 135] things all while doing all the things
[135 - 137] that speaker can do like playing music
[137 - 140] or doing timers or any other of a number
[140 - 142] of things
[142 - 144] um did you find a good way to phrase
[144 - 146] questions like amounts in measurements
[146 - 148] or temperatures in recipes
[148 - 151] yeah some of that is trial and error i
[151 - 153] think these devices the screens on them
[153 - 155] are kind of useful because you're kind
[155 - 157] of training them they're kind of
[157 - 159] training you and as you go along as you
[159 - 160] ask questions
[160 - 162] both of those devices would display the
[162 - 164] question they thought you asked on the
[164 - 166] top of the screen so you could kind of
[166 - 167] check yourself and see where you went
[167 - 170] wrong if you get weird answers
[170 - 172] let me know if there's any other
[172 - 174] questions you have and i will keep an
[174 - 178] eye on that and thanks for watching
