[16 - 16] smart home assistants are becoming
[16 - 20] wildly popular by 2021 over half of
[20 - 21] american households are expected to own
[21 - 24] one of these little digital helpers and
[24 - 25] many people keep them in the kitchen
[25 - 27] which is often the hub of home life
[27 - 29] manufacturers believe that using them in
[29 - 31] the kitchen is one of their most
[31 - 33] important applications we looked at
[33 - 35] models from the two biggest players in
[35 - 37] the game the google nest hub max and the
[37 - 39] amazon echo show we pitted them against
[39 - 40] each other in three rounds of
[40 - 42] increasingly difficult cooking questions
[42 - 45] to find the best kitchen assistant let's
[45 - 46] take a look at how we arrived at our
[46 - 48] winner in this head-to-head match-up
[51 - 53] [Music] so in the first round we really focused
[53 - 55] so in the first round we really focused on simple factual questions things that
[55 - 57] you always have to look up on your phone
[57 - 58] or something when you're cooking a lot
[58 - 61] of math with finite answers we also did
[61 - 63] a lot of timers because this is a great
[63 - 64] way to use these when you're busy
[64 - 66] cooking and your hands are dirty you can
[66 - 68] just ask it to set a timer or multiple
[68 - 71] timers without touching anything and
[71 - 72] trying to find your timer or get your
[72 - 74] phone really dirty in the kitchen and
[74 - 76] you looked at both accuracy and how they
[76 - 78] were to interact with ease of use
[78 - 80] definitely alexa
[80 - 82] how many tablespoons are in a quarter
[82 - 85] cup one quarter cup is four tablespoons
[85 - 87] okay google how many tablespoons in a
[87 - 91] quarter cup 0.25 us cup is equal to 4 us
[92 - 94] tablespoons he got the answer he did the conversion
[94 - 98] he got the answer he did the conversion he still wanted to say 0.25 not
[98 - 100] as friendly sounding as what alexa said
[100 - 101] yeah i feel like he's like in the
[101 - 103] military yeah exactly it's like we have
[103 - 107] to go to you know oh 500 exactly yeah
[108 - 111] convert 20 grams to ounces 20 grams is
[111 - 115] equal to 0.705 ounce alexa
[115 - 118] convert 20 grams to ounces 20 grams is
[118 - 122] about 0.71 ounces she rounded it up oh
[122 - 124] interesting both are accurate personally
[124 - 126] i'd rather do the rounding myself yeah i
[126 - 129] would rather have the real number and
[129 - 131] decide how accurate i want to be with it
[131 - 134] so uh slight points to google here but
[134 - 136] both of them were right right it's been
[136 - 137] fun chatting at all
[137 - 139] i'm really pregnant i'm doing four days
[139 - 141] let's make some cookies
[142 - 144] so you're gonna put those in and i'm
[144 - 145] gonna set some timers
[145 - 148] okay google set a timer for cookies for
[148 - 151] 12 minutes all right a 12-minute timer
[151 - 154] called cookies starting now alexa set a
[154 - 157] timer for cookies for 12 minutes cookies
[157 - 160] timer 12 minutes starting now
[160 - 161] so one of the things that you can do is
[161 - 163] you can set multiple timers and check on
[163 - 164] them you could be
[164 - 166] making a roast you have cookies in the
[166 - 168] oven that you don't want to forget and
[168 - 170] you're running a stand mixer for four
[170 - 172] minutes holidays come to mind i mean
[172 - 174] holidays dinner party i like that on the
[174 - 176] google one you can see all the timers at
[176 - 177] the same time this one is only showing
[178 - 180] me one of the timers so i have to ask it
[180 - 183] alexa show me all my timers
[183 - 185] here are your timers and there's two
[185 - 187] there where's the third one oh there it
[187 - 189] is okay but it's a weird display like
[189 - 191] you can't yeah this one's hanging off
[191 - 193] the side too it's a little bit odd but
[193 - 196] you can see them all
[196 - 199] up cookie time
[205 - 205] okay google turn off the timer called
[206 - 209] cookies your cookies timer is done alexa
[210 - 216] your cookies timer is done alexa turn off the timer called cookies nice
[216 - 219] nice one problem i ran into in testing is
[219 - 222] when i tried to add time to a timer
[222 - 224] i had to figure out a certain way to ask
[224 - 226] it with the google one i kept getting
[226 - 228] extra timers they just kept propagating
[228 - 230] like i tried it was trying to say you
[230 - 232] know hey google add 15 minutes to the
[232 - 235] timer called roast beef second timer
[235 - 237] roast beef for 15 minutes there you go
[237 - 239] and we're starting now no it's not what
[239 - 241] you want for example we just tempt the
[241 - 243] roast beef it's not done yet we think it
[243 - 245] needs 15 more minutes we just want to up
[245 - 247] the time by that now it starts the
[247 - 248] second timer yeah now and they're
[248 - 249] running concurrently so it's not like
[249 - 252] it's 15 minutes on the end
[252 - 254] there were 12 cookies here yeah but our
[254 - 256] camera people have been in there and
[256 - 258] getting some of them so there's only a
[258 - 261] few left for us which is really sad only
[263 - 265] right all right
[265 - 267] all right should we bump it up a notch yes we're
[267 - 269] gonna ask more difficult questions
[272 - 274] [Music] so these are the mid-level questions
[274 - 276] so these are the mid-level questions we're gonna start on the easy end okay
[276 - 278] google what is the weight of a half cup
[279 - 281] baking soda one half teaspoon equals
[281 - 283] three grams it's giving all this other
[283 - 285] stuff equals one stick equals four
[285 - 287] ounces equals one hundred thirteen grams
[288 - 290] sugar granulated white one cup equals
[290 - 292] seven ounces okay google stop it wrap it
[293 - 296] okay alexa how much does a half cup of
[296 - 298] sugar weigh half cup of sugars weighs
[298 - 300] about 100 grams that's correct we're
[300 - 302] gonna give this one to alexa because we
[302 - 304] got a lot too much information
[304 - 306] from google we just wanted the weight
[306 - 308] that we were looking for not the weight
[308 - 310] of everything else in the pantry okay
[310 - 312] google what is this xinhua according to
[312 - 314] wikipedia the shinwa is a conical sieve
[314 - 316] with an extremely fine mesh
[316 - 319] alexa what is this xinhua
[319 - 321] china officially the people's republic
[322 - 326] east china alexa stop alexa what is a
[328 - 330] shinwa a shinwa is a conical sieve with an
[330 - 332] a shinwa is a conical sieve with an extremely fine mesh
[332 - 334] okay so that was interesting clearly it
[334 - 336] was the same source because they recited
[336 - 338] the same exact words we got the source
[338 - 340] where they got the information from
[340 - 342] google and here
[342 - 344] not so much no you liked that about
[344 - 346] google right yeah google would tell you
[346 - 347] where it gets the information some of
[347 - 349] the time when we asked alexa questions
[349 - 352] we got an amazon customer said and it'd
[352 - 354] be like what carol from iowa says about
[354 - 356] this and sometimes it didn't relate at
[356 - 358] all google home was a little bit better
[358 - 360] at that it was telling you where it got
[360 - 362] the info random amazon reviewers
[362 - 364] comments is not a solid source of
[369 - 369] all right so we are in our most
[369 - 370] difficult third and final round and
[370 - 372] we're gonna cook some salmon we've got a
[372 - 374] bunch of questions here let's see how it
[374 - 376] goes lisa we want to fire off the first
[377 - 379] one okay google what cooking oil should i
[379 - 382] okay google what cooking oil should i use coconut oil vegetable oil canola oil
[382 - 385] grapeseed oil avocado oil sunflower seed
[385 - 388] oil sesame oil hemp seed oil okay google
[388 - 390] it's enough alexa what cooking oil
[390 - 393] should i use to cook salmon
[393 - 395] i fry the salmon in a hot pan with a bit
[395 - 396] of olive oil about three minutes per
[396 - 398] side so it is still pink inside and
[398 - 400] serve this over the lentils it sounds
[400 - 402] like it was someone commenting on a
[402 - 404] recipe they read and going well i served
[405 - 406] it's kind of like
[406 - 408] okay it's not what i asked all right you
[408 - 410] know what we have canola oil in the pan
[410 - 412] let's move on to something else we have
[414 - 417] the oil is hot
[418 - 418] all right let's talk about doneness
[418 - 420] let's see if they can give us any help
[420 - 422] to know when our piece of salmon is
[422 - 424] going to be done we recommend using an
[424 - 426] instant read thermometer
[426 - 428] but if you don't have that or you don't
[428 - 430] know what temperature you're looking for
[430 - 431] maybe we can ask them
[431 - 434] okay google how do i know when salmon is
[434 - 437] fully cooked on the website the wild
[437 - 439] salmonco.com they say
[439 - 441] salmon will change from translucent to
[441 - 443] opaque as it cooks after six to eight
[443 - 445] minutes of cooking check for doneness by
[445 - 447] taking a sharp knife to peek into the
[447 - 448] thickest part
[448 - 450] if the meat is beginning to flake but
[450 - 452] still has a little translucency in the
[452 - 453] middle it is done
[453 - 455] not bad would have preferred a
[455 - 457] temperature but those are not bad visual
[457 - 459] cues yeah alexa how do i know when
[459 - 462] salmon is done salmon is considered safe
[462 - 464] to eat when it has reached an internal
[464 - 467] temperature of 145 degrees fahrenheit
[467 - 470] straightforward no source and honestly
[470 - 473] we've done this test and if you cook
[473 - 477] wild salmon past 120 or if farmed salmon
[477 - 479] past 125 you're getting into a seriously
[479 - 482] dried out salmon territory so 145 is a
[482 - 484] little bit high hey google what
[484 - 486] temperature does america's test kitchen
[486 - 488] say to cook salmon too
[488 - 490] according to america's test kitchen to
[490 - 492] avoid overcooking the salmon you should
[492 - 496] cook to about 125 degrees out good boy
[498 - 500] so in the end if you're wondering
[500 - 501] which one we preferred it was really
[501 - 503] close we felt like alexa was a little
[503 - 505] easier to talk to
[505 - 507] google we felt like it was a little more
[507 - 509] accurate we loved getting the sources
[511 - 512] we favored google slightly for that
[514 - 516] reason but again these are evolving so fast
[516 - 518] but again these are evolving so fast things are changing
[518 - 520] so at this moment we gave google the
[520 - 522] slight edge but we recommend both of
[522 - 523] them so for more information on both of
[524 - 526] these products check out the link below
[526 - 527] make sure to ask us your smart home
[527 - 529] assistant questions in the comments and
