[13 - 13] coolers are perfect for whether you're
[13 - 15] camping having a party a picnic and a
[15 - 17] whole lot more a 25 cooler used to be
[17 - 19] the norm but you might have noticed
[19 - 21] these super expensive coolers have hit
[21 - 22] the market recently are these things
[22 - 25] special in some way or well the old 25
[25 - 27] one do now to find out we got seven
[28 - 29] different models and they're priced from
[29 - 33] about 20 all the way up to 380 dollars
[33 - 34] we put them through lots of testing
[34 - 36] focusing on their ease of use their cold
[36 - 39] retention and their durability
[39 - 41] our tester spent weeks and weeks on this
[41 - 42] but we're going to show you some of the
[42 - 46] highlights let's take a look
[48 - 48] all right i have the coleman performance
[48 - 49] right here
[49 - 51] feels pretty light
[51 - 53] let's see what it is
[53 - 56] it's seven pounds it's so very light
[56 - 57] yeah that's good i like that it has a
[57 - 59] drain that definitely makes a difference
[60 - 61] i'm gonna grab the pelican oh my god can
[61 - 63] i give you a hand yeah
[63 - 65] yeah you take that half
[65 - 67] this is empty imagine if it had ice and
[67 - 70] food in it that's crazy
[70 - 73] 38.3 pounds wow
[73 - 75] all right it's good uh it's got that
[75 - 77] nice rubber gasket lid stays up does it
[78 - 80] bop you in the head it's got wheel wells
[80 - 81] though for these big wheels it's you can
[82 - 83] see that it's cut in and so it
[83 - 85] definitely feeds into the usable space a
[85 - 87] little bit yeah and these walls are
[87 - 88] really thick
[88 - 92] this is nice these handles are real
[92 - 94] it's a little tippy yeah if you open it
[94 - 97] though and don't take caution
[97 - 99] okay that's not good there's no drain so
[99 - 101] anytime you want to get the water out of
[101 - 102] there you have to unload the whole
[102 - 105] shebang oh my god this thing's heavy
[105 - 107] 23.8 pounds
[108 - 111] and haha it stays open look at this it
[111 - 112] doesn't want to tip over yeah so it's
[112 - 114] heavier but it's sturdier it says
[114 - 117] certified bear resistant right here so
[117 - 119] if you're camping in yosemite oh my
[120 - 122] goodness so it turns out the high-end models are
[122 - 125] so it turns out the high-end models are just plain heavy all the cheaper ones
[125 - 127] weighed under 12 pounds by comparison
[127 - 129] the yeti weighed around 25 pounds and
[129 - 131] the pelican weighed a whopping 38 pounds
[132 - 133] and that's when they're empty we didn't
[133 - 135] add food yet carrying these things full
[135 - 138] of food is a two-person job but we
[138 - 140] noticed that extra weight also kept them
[140 - 142] from tipping over and they had better
[142 - 144] features overall so does all that extra
[144 - 145] weight also translate to keeping stuff
[146 - 148] colder it's time to find out round two cold
[148 - 151] it's time to find out round two cold retention
[153 - 153] so hannah as you know this is one of our
[153 - 155] cold retention tests we've had all the
[156 - 158] coolers with ice packs and seltzer to
[158 - 160] see how well they stayed under 50
[160 - 163] degrees so this is day five all right
[164 - 165] you got it
[165 - 167] i can already tell it feels pretty warm
[167 - 169] that's not good yeah this is way over 50
[169 - 171] degrees okay we've got the yeti let's
[171 - 172] try this one
[172 - 175] wow definitely under 50 degrees
[175 - 177] pleasantly cool
[177 - 179] wow we are officially above 50 degrees
[179 - 182] wow okay so this is the pelican
[182 - 184] falling a little bit behind the yeti but
[184 - 185] this thing is built like a tank like
[186 - 187] what the heck in fact the walls are
[187 - 190] thicker it looks like than the yeti so
[190 - 192] we don't really know why it's not quite
[192 - 194] measuring up are you thinking what i'm
[195 - 203] thinking i'll get the sawzall
[211 - 211] so when we cut these coolers in half it
[211 - 213] was really clear that there was a lot
[213 - 215] more insulation in the high-end ones
[215 - 218] this is built to stay cold where this
[218 - 219] maybe less but we also wondered about
[220 - 221] the yeti compared to the pelican the two
[221 - 224] super expensive coolers the yeti was a
[224 - 227] little better so we excavated a cube of
[227 - 229] each of their insulation and this is the
[229 - 230] yeti right here
[230 - 232] and this is the pelican
[232 - 234] do you notice anything interesting
[234 - 236] this one looks like swiss cheese that's
[236 - 239] the yeti poles yeah so the yeti's
[239 - 241] insulation is much airier they're air
[241 - 242] holes in there and we talked to some
[242 - 243] scientists about this and found out
[243 - 245] something really interesting air is a
[245 - 247] really good insulator so these air holes
[247 - 249] helped the yeti keep its contents even
[249 - 251] colder for even longer so this is where
[251 - 253] we start to see a big difference between
[253 - 255] the high end and lower end coolers
[255 - 257] bottom line any of these coolers can
[257 - 259] keep food cold for a day or two but the
[259 - 261] pelican and the yeti were way better at
[261 - 263] it so let's go to our third and final
[263 - 267] round durability
[270 - 270] okay so this is our durability test and
[270 - 272] we imagine what would happen if you had
[272 - 275] your cooler it was full you had it on
[275 - 277] your tailgate and the worst happens so
[277 - 279] we're gonna push this off
[279 - 286] all right one two three
[289 - 289] oh my god well that wasn't very good no
[289 - 291] clearly pretty bad if that was full of
[291 - 293] craft beer i'd be crying right now not
[293 - 295] only did the ice jump all over the floor
[295 - 298] like we saw but the handle broke off so
[298 - 300] it's just another sign of how these are
[300 - 302] not as well constructed as the high-end
[302 - 304] coolers all right everybody one two
[304 - 308] three
[310 - 310] look at the latches are still just as
[311 - 314] tight all right sweet party saved yeah so when
[314 - 315] all right sweet party saved yeah so when it came to durability once again the
[316 - 318] yeti and the pelicans stood out all the
[318 - 320] cheaper coolers spilled open only the
[320 - 322] yeti and the pelicans stayed intact so
[322 - 324] lisa who's the winner
[324 - 326] when it comes to ease of use cold
[326 - 329] retention and durability the yeti tundra
[329 - 331] 45 lived up to the hype it's our overall
[332 - 333] winner for a cheaper option we also
[334 - 336] recommend the coleman 50 quart extreme
[336 - 338] wheeled cooler it had good cold
[338 - 340] retention capabilities had nice roomy
[340 - 342] interior and it also had wheels so it's
[342 - 343] easy to transport for the full results
[344 - 345] of our testing and to see our winning
