[1 - 1] i feel like i'm brushing this grill's
[1 - 3] teeth i know
[4 - 5] it's all set for its checkup
[5 - 10] [Music]
[12 - 12] grilling is a quintessential summertime
[12 - 14] activity which means cleaning your grill
[14 - 16] is too or at least it should be it's a
[16 - 19] small chore with a big payoff a smooth
[19 - 20] gunk-free cooking surface that's
[20 - 22] actually more nonstick and makes your
[22 - 24] food taste better a good grill brush
[24 - 25] should be able to scrub the entire
[25 - 27] cooking surface even though it's hard to
[27 - 29] reach corners and edges it should work
[29 - 31] with minimal effort and it should be
[31 - 32] durable enough to last for years without
[32 - 34] falling apart after hearing about
[34 - 35] availability issues with our previous
[36 - 37] winner we set out to find a widely
[37 - 39] available grill brush that could
[39 - 41] efficiently clean both gas and charcoal
[41 - 43] grills we tested eight models priced
[43 - 45] from five bucks up to 35
[45 - 46] and rated them on performance ease of
[46 - 48] use and durability all of them got the
[48 - 50] job done but only one of them made it
[50 - 55] easy here are the highlights
[57 - 57] if you don't want to eat the leftover
[57 - 59] stuff that's been stuck on your grill
[59 - 60] grate since last time you grilled you
[60 - 62] want to clean them before you drop the
[62 - 64] food the food will taste cleaner and
[64 - 67] more flavorful and you really get a good
[67 - 69] grill mark if it's got a clean grate all
[69 - 70] right can you talk a little bit about
[70 - 72] why we tested on gas and charcoal so we
[72 - 73] want to make sure that any brush we
[73 - 75] recommend will work on both because some
[75 - 77] people have both yeah we want something
[77 - 79] that's going to work with every kind of
[79 - 81] grill no matter what you have all right
[81 - 82] we're doing burgers because they make a
[82 - 88] big old mess
[89 - 89] usually be a bummer and have a grill
[89 - 91] this dirty but we are excited because we
[91 - 93] are ready to test our grill brushes this
[93 - 95] one is great scrape woody shovel what
[95 - 97] you're supposed to do is get the grill
[97 - 99] ripping hot run this over and over and
[99 - 101] over and over the great so you burn
[101 - 103] grooves into it that'll actually end up
[103 - 105] cleaning your grape
[105 - 106] how does it feel
[106 - 109] it gets stuck on the bars across bars
[109 - 112] yeah because it's so firm it's cleaning
[112 - 113] the tops pretty well but these are
[114 - 116] triangular shaped bars and until that's
[116 - 119] burned in really deeply the sides are
[119 - 121] still pretty dirty gas and charcoal they
[121 - 123] have different grate patterns so you're
[123 - 125] going to need two of these so they'll
[125 - 127] fit the two different grate patterns
[127 - 129] this is the webber 12 inch grill brush
[129 - 131] yep triangular head
[131 - 132] metal bristles
[132 - 134] how's that working for you oh my god
[134 - 136] look at that
[136 - 138] that's working pretty well yeah look how
[138 - 139] you know
[139 - 141] it's getting the sides even before you
[141 - 142] turn it
[144 - 145] wow that seems to be getting in there oh my
[145 - 147] that seems to be getting in there oh my god look at it love the short bristles
[148 - 149] yeah they are so good at scrubbing and
[149 - 151] getting in without asking me to like do
[151 - 154] gymnastics okay i've got the kona this
[154 - 155] is the one that has metal coils instead
[155 - 157] of bristles
[157 - 159] not getting the sides as well as some of
[159 - 161] the other ones yeah if you don't really
[161 - 163] get in there and shove this thing down
[163 - 165] nothing's happening it's just scraping
[165 - 167] the top i don't feel as though it's
[167 - 170] getting down on the sides very well okay
[170 - 173] they're getting stuck yeah so it's
[173 - 174] interesting it gets
[174 - 177] down into the grate really well besides
[177 - 180] but it totally gets stuck a couple key
[180 - 182] factors affected the performance of the
[182 - 184] brushes in general we prefer those with
[184 - 186] bristles to those without they were
[186 - 187] better at cleaning the grill grates the
[187 - 189] bristles ranged from a half an inch all
[189 - 191] the way up to two inches long and we
[191 - 193] preferred those with shorter bristles
[193 - 194] they were better at cleaning and they
[194 - 195] didn't get stuck on the grates like the
[195 - 197] longer bristles did we also preferred
[197 - 199] brushes with triangular heads the square
[199 - 201] and rectangular ones were okay but the
[201 - 203] triangular ones really let us get
[203 - 205] between the grates with the corners so
[205 - 207] in sum all of these could clean a grill
[207 - 209] grate some were just more thorough at it
[209 - 211] all right let's go to our second round
[211 - 212] ease of use
[215 - 218] [Music] we're cooking chicken on both grates all
[218 - 219] we're cooking chicken on both grates all right so i'm gonna go ahead and put some
[219 - 221] barbecue sauce on and the reason we
[221 - 223] chose barbecue sauce it's got a lot of
[223 - 225] sugar in it it's gonna make a big old
[225 - 226] sticky mess
[226 - 229] the sugar just burns and bubbles and
[229 - 231] sticks chicken's beautiful the grate is
[231 - 234] not all that sugar burnt on there house
[234 - 237] of horrors in there okay i've got the mr
[237 - 239] barbecue oversized grill brush which
[240 - 241] they got that red this thing is a beast
[241 - 244] it's really heavy it's got a knob on top
[244 - 246] that you're supposed to grab i guess uh
[246 - 248] all right i'm a little worried about my
[248 - 249] hand here how do you feel about that
[249 - 252] handle it's very awkward you have to
[252 - 254] push down on this for it to really work
[254 - 255] you don't have enough leverage you're
[255 - 257] too far away i don't love the scraper
[257 - 260] i'm bumping in here and i can't get all
[260 - 262] that there's this little triangle beyond
[262 - 264] which you cannot pass ease of use for
[264 - 266] these grill brushes came down to a few
[266 - 269] key design elements first of all five of
[269 - 270] the eight brushes were equipped with
[270 - 272] metal scrapers these can be used to
[272 - 274] scrape off really burnt on crud and
[274 - 276] while we found them somewhat useful that
[276 - 278] metal part prevents the brush from
[278 - 280] getting all the way to the edge of the
[280 - 282] grill grate so you leave a swath of the
[282 - 284] grill unclean we also looked at the
[284 - 285] length of the handles now these range
[285 - 288] from 7 to 14 inches and while the longer
[288 - 290] ones kept us farther away from the heat
[290 - 292] the shorter ones really worked out
[292 - 293] better for us they gave us better
[293 - 295] leverage and more agility to get in
[295 - 297] there really scrub all right now for our
[297 - 304] crucial final round durability
[306 - 306] with each brush we're going to go back
[306 - 310] and forth 200 times on gas and charcoal
[310 - 312] just to make sure that they really
[312 - 315] withstand hard work all right i have the
[315 - 317] grill badger i have the next grill
[317 - 325] cheers cheers
[327 - 327] okay this one had a baby
[327 - 330] oh man or it has a nose i'm not sure
[330 - 332] what that is i don't want to know and
[332 - 333] this one
[333 - 335] got a little toasted
[335 - 337] which the company says is a good thing
[337 - 338] because then
[338 - 340] if they fall out they'll burn up so they
[340 - 342] won't end up in your food but
[342 - 344] it doesn't bode well for the long term
[344 - 349] durability of the brush
[351 - 351] all right 200
[351 - 353] the weber did a great job full marks for
[353 - 355] the weber yeah this is the kona and
[356 - 358] those coils are tough as nails so this
[358 - 359] is the one that has nylon bristles it's
[359 - 361] only supposed to be used on a cooler
[361 - 365] grill
[368 - 368] i think one of these little red guys is
[368 - 370] down there in the grill oh yeah i see it
[370 - 372] down there we really want to make sure
[372 - 373] that none of these metal bristles are
[373 - 374] going to come out so we're doing an
[374 - 376] extreme durability test lisa is going to
[376 - 379] scrape it across the cement 20 times
[379 - 381] we're gonna check for any loose bristles
[382 - 385] okay one two one two [Music]
[387 - 389] twenty nothing on the sidewalk yeah none of the
[389 - 391] nothing on the sidewalk yeah none of the bristles came out we know it can happen
[391 - 393] but did not happen in our testing
[393 - 395] durability was a key test for us and not
[395 - 397] only did we want to make sure that all
[397 - 399] these brushes would last more than a few
[399 - 400] cleanings but we wanted to make sure
[400 - 402] that any of the brushes that had
[402 - 404] bristles really kept their bristles and
[404 - 405] didn't leave any behind because they can
[405 - 407] end up in your food we also paid special
[407 - 409] attention to the brushes with metal
[409 - 411] bristles because that's a safety concern
[411 - 413] none of the metal bristles fell out in
[413 - 414] our testing but we definitely saw some
[414 - 417] durability issues the nylon brush lost
[417 - 418] some bristles and the steel wool brush
[418 - 421] began to unravel almost immediately our
[421 - 424] winner is the weber 12 inch grill brush
[424 - 426] it has effective short metal bristles
[426 - 429] that really scrub it's got a triangular
[429 - 430] head so we get between the grill grates
[430 - 432] very effectively it doesn't have a
[432 - 434] scraper but that meant we could go all
[434 - 435] the way to the edge of the grill grate
[436 - 437] and clean every inch of the surface
[437 - 439] finally the short handle really gives
[439 - 441] you great leverage and ability to get
[441 - 444] the grates clean which leads to the real
[444 - 446] point of all this better tastier grilled
[446 - 448] food if you have concerns about metal
[448 - 450] bristles we recommend the kona safe
[450 - 453] clean bristle free grill brush it has
[453 - 455] metal coils instead of bristles but it
[455 - 457] did effectively clean both gas and
[457 - 459] charcoal grills which certainly might be
[460 - 462] worth it for peace of mind now for more
